Sørum - worth a visit

Tourists as well as inhabitants can enjoy a trip through Sørum.

From BlakerSorum municipality

From stone age to present day

From Bingsfoss

The "Drive in-version" of Sørum is not what we are trying to sell. In order to experience the really valuable sides of our municipality you need time, and you must be willing to step out of your car. A journey through Sørum is a journey through our own history. A cultivated landscape with fields, farms, strips of wood and low ridges greets you.  Burial mounds and cultural monuments can be found at several places. At Frogner you'll find a 900 year old church. Blaker has kept its distinctive stamp as a rural center with a railway station and an old fortress.  In the older villages there are houses of moderate size and shape, as Lindeberg and Lørenfallet. Examples of  the 'yap architectural style' from the mid-80's you'll find at Heksebergåsen and Lunderåsen. The strength of the established local community are well developed networks of neighbourhoods, schools, groups, clubs and societies the way we find it in Sørum. Sørum is a good place to live and grow up.

Tertitten - Sørumsand

Tertitten train

Experience a jouney by train in railway carriages from the 1890s behind a real steam railway engine.  At Sørumsand you'll find Tertitten, a narrow-gauged museum railway.  The trains are puffing along through fields and meadows as they once did each day between Sørumsand and Skullerud.  The trains run every Sunday during the summer season and in December.  The railway was opened in 1896 and shut down in 1960.  Today 4 km of the railway, together with some of the engines and railway carriages that ran it, is kept as a living museum.

The Sørum Boat

Log boat

Norways oldest known boat (log boat) was found in the beginning of the 1990s in Sørum kommune, where the brook Rømua drains into the river Glomma at Hammeren.
The boat dates back to 170 years B.C. and is presently kept at Sjøfartsmuseet in Oslo for conservation.

Blaker skanse

Blaker entrenchment

Blaker skanse (entrenchment) is a fortification that was erected in 1683 to prevent Swedish units from advancing towards Oslo.  The fortress was closed down in 1820.  The buildings have been used by Statens husflidsskole from 1917 and Statens lærerhøgskole / Høgskolen i Akershus from 1982 until 2003.  The commandant residence burned down in 1973.  It was rebuilt with its exact original appearance, but with internal work adapted to the school's needs.

Excursion suggestions

Boat harbour

You'll find a beautiful nature- and cultural path along the river Glomma from Bingsfossen.

Sørum has many burial mounds, which includes approximately 30 'rundhauger' (circular burial mounds) at Valsmoen.  Speculations go that it could very well be a member of the mighty Sudrheimsætten, Romerikes one and only barony, who is buried in the largest mound.  The burial mounds are situated in the woods between riksvei 171 (classified road) and Sørum gård.  How to get there:  Follow the flood-lit track from the road and take a slight turn to the left where the path ends.

You may also enjoy visiting the local fortification at Holmslia in Blaker.  It's built approximately 400-500 years A.C. by the local villagers to defend themselves against roaming robbers.  How to get there:  The farm Delerud at Mork by riksvei 171 (classified road) between Fetsund and Aurskog.  Path from the farm approx. 500 metres up the hillside.
